The Moon Garden of Japan

Behind a traditional house in Kyoto was a garden that looked ordinary during the day.

At night, however, moonflowers opened.

An elderly gardener named Kenji cared for them.

A visitor asked:

“Why only at night?”

Kenji answered:

“Because some beauty needs darkness.”

The visitor thought about that sentence for years.

Kenji eventually became too old to maintain the garden.

A young girl volunteered to help.

He taught her everything.

How to water the flowers.

How to remove dead leaves.

How to wait patiently.

Before he died, Kenji gave her one final instruction:

“Never rush the garden.”

She followed his advice.

Decades later, she became the garden’s keeper.

Visitors still came at night.

They sat quietly beneath the moon.

And the flowers opened one by one.

The garden remained beautiful because someone had learned that patience can also be a form of love.
