Maria married Thomas when they were young and poor. Soon after their wedding, Thomas left for another country to find work.
He promised to return within two years.
But unexpected debts, difficult working conditions, and immigration problems kept him away.

Eventually, Thomas stopped calling.
Maria raised their daughter alone, working at a market and saving whatever money she could.
She told her daughter that her father was far away, but she never promised he would return.

Thomas lowered his head.
He did not demand immediate forgiveness. He began helping their daughter with school, found local work, and respected Maria’s need for time.
Over the following year, they slowly rebuilt their relationship.
Maria eventually decided to remain married to him, but they agreed that honesty and regular communication would never again be optional.
Their reunion was difficult, not magical.
Thomas had learned that earning money for a family meant little if he abandoned the emotional responsibilities of being part of it.
