The Last Boat on the Mekong

Every evening, an old boat crossed the Mekong River.

Its captain, Dara, had operated the boat for fifty years.

One evening, a young passenger asked:

“Why haven’t you stopped?”

Dara laughed.

“Because someone always needs to cross.”

That night, heavy rain caused the river to rise.

Most boats stopped operating.

But Dara noticed a family waiting on the opposite bank.

They needed to reach the village before morning.

Dara turned his boat around.

The journey was dangerous.

But slowly, through the rain, they reached the other side.

The family thanked him.

Dara simply smiled.

Years later, Dara retired.

The village built a small wooden sign beside the river:

“For the captain who never left anyone waiting.”

Dara visited the river every morning.

He watched new boats crossing the water.

He realized his journey had never really been about boats.

It had been about helping people reach the other side.
