Lily was the only daughter of a powerful property developer. She fell in love with Ben, a poor mechanic who repaired old cars in a small roadside workshop.
Ben had no expensive clothes or luxurious car, but he always kept his promises. When Lily felt overwhelmed by her family’s expectations, he reminded her that she deserved to choose her own happiness.
Her father, Mr. Harrison, considered Ben unsuitable.
One afternoon, he invited Ben to his office and placed a million-dollar cheque on the desk.
“Take this money and disappear from Lily’s life,” he said. “You will never be able to provide what she needs.”
Ben stared at the cheque. It could pay his family’s debts and give his younger sister a chance to attend university.
For a moment, he felt tempted.
Then he pushed the cheque back.
“I need money, sir. I won’t pretend otherwise. But if I accept this, I’ll spend the rest of my life knowing I traded Lily’s trust for it.”
He left without taking a single dollar.
When Lily discovered what happened, she confronted her father. She told him she would rather build a simple life with Ben than marry someone chosen for his bank account.
Her father refused to attend their small wedding.
Years passed. Ben expanded his workshop into a successful automobile business, and Lily became a respected designer. They never forgot the difficult years that had taught them to work together.
One day, Mr. Harrison arrived at their home after his business suffered serious losses. Ben welcomed him, offered help, and never mentioned the cheque.
The old man began to cry.
“You could have taken everything from me,” he whispered.
Ben answered, “I never wanted your money. I only wanted your daughter to be happy.”
