The Last Bus Home

Every Friday evening, Anna took the last bus from the city to visit her sick father. On the same bus sat Michael, a quiet mechanic who always offered her the window seat.

They began talking during the long journey.

Michael learned that Anna worked two jobs to pay her father’s medical expenses. Anna learned that Michael was saving money to open his own repair shop.

Their friendship slowly became love.

But Anna’s responsibilities left little room for romance. She often canceled dates at the last moment, and Michael sometimes felt forgotten.

One night, after Anna missed another meeting, Michael told her he could no longer live waiting for a place in her crowded life.

Anna understood his frustration but asked him to remember that she was trying to keep her family alive.

They separated.

Months later, Anna’s father recovered enough to return home. For the first time in years, she had an evening free.

She boarded the last bus and found Michael sitting in his usual seat.

He had sold his motorcycle and postponed opening his shop to help his younger brother through school. Anna realized that his own struggles had been just as real as hers.

They talked honestly for hours.

Michael apologized for expecting her to have more time than she did. Anna apologized for never explaining how exhausted she felt.

They did not promise that life would suddenly become easy.

Instead, they agreed to make room for each other in the life they actually had.

When the bus reached their stop, they stepped into the cool night together.

For the first time, neither felt that love was another responsibility to carry alone.
