Daniel and Rose met when they were sixteen.
They promised to grow old together.
Life had other plans.
Daniel moved away.
Rose cared for her sick father.
They lost contact.
Forty years passed.
One day, Daniel received a letter.
Rose was dying.
He immediately traveled to see her.
When he entered the room, Rose smiled.
“You’re late.”
Daniel laughed through tears.
“I know.”
She reached for his hand.
“Did you keep your promise?”
Daniel nodded.
“I never married.”
Rose closed her eyes.
“Neither did I.”
They spent the afternoon remembering their childhood.
Before sunset, Rose whispered,
“I wish we had more time.”
Daniel held her hand.
“So do I.”
She passed away peacefully that evening.
Years later, Daniel returned to their childhood village.
He planted two trees beside the river.
One for himself.
One for Rose.
As the trees grew together, he often sat beneath them.
He realized that some love stories do not end with marriage.
Some end with a promise that survives an entire lifetime.
