The Letter from the Prisoner

Daniel was imprisoned for a crime he didn’t commit.

Before he was taken away, his girlfriend Clara promised she would wait.

But everyone told her to leave him.

“You don’t know when he’ll come home.”

Clara stayed.

Every month, Daniel wrote her a letter.

She answered every one.

For twelve years, their relationship existed only on paper.

Then new evidence proved Daniel’s innocence.

He was released.

Clara waited outside the prison gates.

Daniel walked toward her slowly.

“You waited?”

She smiled.

“I told you I would.”

He looked at her with tears in his eyes.

“But twelve years…”

“I know.”

They married six months later.

Their wedding was small.

There were no expensive decorations.

Just family, friends, and the two people who had survived twelve years of uncertainty.

Daniel later asked Clara why she never gave up.

She answered,

“Because I wasn’t waiting for a perfect life. I was waiting for you.”
