The Love They Couldn’t Afford

Maya and Adrian fell in love while working in a small restaurant.

Maya washed dishes. Adrian delivered food.

Neither had much money, but they shared their dreams during quiet moments after closing.

They wanted a small apartment, a garden, and a peaceful life.

Then Adrian’s mother became seriously ill.

He needed money for her treatment, so he accepted a job in another country.

“Wait for me,” he told Maya.

“I will.”

For two years, Adrian worked twelve-hour shifts. He sent almost every paycheck home for his mother’s medicine.

Maya waited.

She worked two jobs, saved money, and kept their old photograph beside her bed.

Then one day, Adrian returned.

But he was different.

He had lost weight. His hands were rough. His dreams seemed smaller.

“I don’t have anything,” he whispered.

Maya took his hand.

“You came back. That’s enough.”

They rented a tiny room with a broken window.

There was no garden.

No expensive furniture.

No luxury.

But every morning they drank tea together beside the window.

Years later, they finally bought a small house.

Their garden was tiny, but Maya planted roses.

Adrian looked at them and smiled.

“We waited so long for this.”

Maya shook her head.

“No. We worked for it.”

And they understood that love was not about having everything.

Sometimes love was simply refusing to leave when life gave you almost nothing.
