The Bell of the Himalayas

High in the Himalayas stood a small monastery.

Every morning, a monk rang a bronze bell.

Its sound traveled across the valley.

One winter, the monk became too old to climb the tower.

A young boy volunteered to take his place.

The monk taught him:

“Do not ring the bell for noise. Ring it for peace.”

The boy didn’t understand.

Years passed.

He became the monastery’s bell keeper.

Whenever villagers argued, he rang the bell.

Whenever someone died, he rang it.

Whenever a child was born, he rang it.

The sound became part of village life.

One day, the boy asked the old monk:

“Did I finally understand?”

The monk smiled.

“You stopped asking what the bell means.”

The young man listened.

The bell rang across the mountains.

He finally understood.

Some sounds do not need explanations.

They simply remind people to pause.
