The Village Above the Clouds

High in the Andes Mountains, there was a village so high that clouds often floated beneath its houses.

The villagers called it Qhapaq, meaning “the place above the clouds.”

A young shepherd named Tomas lived there with his grandmother. Every morning, he carried his sheep toward the highest meadow, where the mountains disappeared into mist.

One morning, Tomas discovered a narrow stone staircase hidden behind a waterfall.

He had never seen it before.

Curious, he climbed.

At the top stood an abandoned stone temple.

Inside was a golden bowl filled with clear water.

Beside it was an inscription:

“Take nothing. Leave only gratitude.”

Tomas touched the water.

Suddenly, the clouds below began moving rapidly, revealing a breathtaking view of valleys, rivers, and distant mountains.

He understood why the temple had been hidden.

It was not a treasure chamber.

It was a place meant to remind people how small they were beneath the enormous sky.

Tomas returned to the village and told his grandmother.

She smiled.

“My grandfather knew about that place.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because some discoveries must find you.”

Years later, Tomas became the village elder.

He never revealed the temple’s exact location.

Instead, he taught every child to climb the mountain, sit quietly, and watch the clouds.

And whenever someone asked what treasure was hidden above the clouds, Tomas answered:

“Perspective.”
