Six months after their first date, Daniel took Emily to a beautiful garden overlooking the city.
He held both her hands and looked into her eyes.
“Emily, I have something important to tell you.”
She smiled nervously.
“What is it?”
“My name isn’t just Daniel Carter. I’m Richard Carter’s son. My family owns Carter Global.”
Emily froze.
She had seen the Carter name on buildings, advertisements, and business magazines. She suddenly understood why Daniel sometimes received calls from assistants and why he drove a car worth more than her mother’s house.
She pulled her hands away.
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I wanted you to know me before you knew my money.”
Emily looked down.
“Your family will never accept someone like me.”
Daniel took her hands again.
“I don’t care what they think. I want to marry you.”
But when Richard Carter learned about their relationship, he immediately ordered an investigation into Emily’s background.
He discovered that she worked at a café, lived in a small apartment with her mother, and had no valuable property or savings.
To him, those facts proved she was unsuitable.
He summoned Emily to his office without Daniel’s knowledge.
When she arrived, Richard sat behind a massive desk overlooking the city.
“I will be direct,” he said. “My son has a future to protect. You are not part of that future.”
Emily swallowed nervously.
“I love Daniel. I have never asked him for money.”
Richard opened a drawer and placed a check on the desk.
“Five hundred thousand dollars. Enough to pay your family’s debts, buy a house, and start a comfortable life. Take it and disappear from my son’s life.”
Emily stared at the check.
For a moment, she thought about her mother’s unpaid bills, Noah’s education, and the years she had spent worrying about money.
That amount could change their lives overnight.
But it would also mean losing the man she loved.
She slowly pushed the check back.
“Mr. Carter, I may be poor, but my love is not for sale.”
Richard’s expression hardened.
“Everyone has a price.”
“Perhaps that’s why you cannot understand me,” Emily answered quietly. “You have spent your life buying things, so you believe everything can be bought.”
She stood and walked toward the door.
Richard’s voice followed her.
“You will regret humiliating me.”
Emily left without looking back.
That evening, she told Daniel everything.
He was furious.
He drove straight to his father’s mansion and confronted him.
“You tried to buy the woman I love!”
Richard slammed his hand against the desk.
“I was protecting you!”
“From what? Happiness?”
“From making the biggest mistake of your life!”
Daniel took a deep breath.
“Then watch me make it.”
He told his father that he intended to marry Emily, whether or not the family approved.
Richard gave him one final warning.
“If you marry her, you are no longer my son. You will receive no inheritance, no position in my company, and no financial assistance.”
Daniel looked at the father who had taught him that money was power.
Then he made a decision that changed everything.
“Keep your money, Dad. I would rather struggle with a woman who loves me than live in a mansion where love has a price.”
The following morning, Daniel moved out.
Three months later, he and Emily married in a small garden ceremony.
Emily wore a simple white dress borrowed from a friend. Daniel wore an inexpensive suit he had purchased with money from his first independent job.
There were no famous guests, no luxury cars, and no extravagant decorations.
Emily’s mother cried as she watched her daughter exchange vows.
Daniel’s father did not attend.
But when Daniel kissed his bride, he whispered something that made her tears fall.
“I cannot promise you a life without problems. I can only promise that you will never face them alone.”
Emily kissed him and replied, “That’s the only promise I ever wanted.”
Neither knew how hard the next five years would be.
